Blue Book Reading Level 10.0 (Age 12+)
NTC Vocabulary Builders, Blue Book, is a softbacked textbook/workbook consisting of 36 Lessons.
Some of the lessons begin with a reading in which certain words appear in dark type. After reading the short essay, students are given a multiple choice exercise in which they choose the appropriate meaning of the selected word based on the context in which it was used. For example
"Schooled in the nuances of gesture and facial expression, mimes encourage audiences to examine body movements with the keen attention of a detective searching for clues."
Question: Which words could best replace nuances?
- embarrassing repetition
- loud outcries
- legal obligations
- slight variations
Then the student is asked to answer questions with a "yes" or "no" and to write a sentence using the vocabulary word correctly for each "no" answer. For example:
Would an irrepressible horse be the appropriate mount for an inexperienced rider?
The student is then asked to choose the word which best completes given sentences.
Other chapters focus on the roots of words such as -greg- meaning flock or herd with examples - aggregate, congregate, egregious, gregarious, segregate - and provides exercises in unlocking and applying meanings.
Following each third chapter there is a review and a test.
At the end of each book there are pages with "flash cards" which can be cut out for use in class or for home study in which each of the selected vocabulary words is on the front of the paper and its definition is on the back.
Reading Level 10.0 ages 12+.
Since each page is perforated at the spine, copies could be made for use in a charter school or for homeschool or classroom. While this book is designed to be used in a classroom, it could be used by anyone interested in improving his/her English vocabulary. Words are tools and one can never have too many tools!
Condition:
We have a number of these books and they are in good condition. They have a barcoded id label on the front cover and a number on the bottom edge. They have the name of a school district stamped on the inside front cover. No other extraneous writing, no highlighting, scribbling, or student names. Bindings are solid and there are no pages missing (as far as I can tell).
